1897-S Morgan Silver Dollar
1897-S Morgan Silver Dollar
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
George T. Morgan’s name is recognized and well respected by most in the numismatic community, especially for the creation of the 1897-S Morgan Silver Dollar. This is because he created the design for the Morgan Silver Dollar series, which started in 1878 and stopped in 1904 until 1921. George’s career started as an assistant in the U.S. Mint, and years later he himself became the Chief Engraver in the U.S. Mint. It is of no surprise that with such a successful track record, his name would be so well known and held to an abnormally high standard as well. The Morgan Silver Dollars were minted at all 5 mints, although the Denver mint only struck the Morgan Silver Dollar in the last year of the series, 1921. Throughout the series, mintages vary from as high as 44,690,000 to as low as only 880! This contrast is what makes collecting an entire complete set so extremely rare and satisfying if accomplished. The 1897-S Morgan Silver Dollar specifically has a mintage of 5,875,000, which is the most for the 1897 minted Morgan Dollars, and helps keep it affordable as well. Available for purchase both online and via the phone (516-739-5822) for a small price of $115, which includes free shipping and handling. A small price to pay for such a large piece of American history, this coin in an MS 65 grade is valued at approximately $525.
